To keep your upholstered furniture in top condition, regular care and cleaning is essential.
In this blog article, we give you valuable tips on how to keep your upholstered furniture, such as leather office chairs, ergonomic chairs, computer chairs, children's chairs, and office stools, in top condition. Please note that these instructions are intended to provide assistance and do not constitute a guarantee. Improper cleaning will void any warranty claims.
Essential Tips for Maintaining Upholstered Furniture
Regular vacuuming is important to remove dust and dirt. Use your vacuum cleaner's upholstery nozzle on the lowest setting or for a thorough cleaning of your upholstered furniture, we recommend our upholstery care brush, which removes even stubborn dirt and makes your upholstery look like new again. With velor fabrics, you should always brush carefully and in the direction of the grain so as not to damage the pile.
For damp cleaning, you can wipe your upholstered furniture with a damp cloth several times a year. Be careful not to wet the cover too much. Avoid printed or impregnated cleaning cloths as these can cause discoloration. Do not use a steam cleaner to clean your upholstered furniture, such as your office chairs, ergonomic chairs, orthopedic chairs, etc.
If your upholstered furniture has removable covers or cushion covers made of fully synthetic material, you can wash them in the washing machine at 30°C on a gentle cycle to restore them to their original appearance.
- For stains, it is important to test any stain remover, including water, on a hidden area of the upholstery to ensure it does not affect the fabric and colors. If you have large or stubborn stains, we recommend calling in a professional. Use pH-neutral cleaning agents as acidic cleaners can damage cotton and cellulose fabrics and alkaline cleaners are not suitable for wool fabrics.
- Always treat stains immediately by blotting with an absorbent cloth rather than rubbing. For seating furniture covers made of sensitive materials such as cotton, linen, silk and viscose, you should consult professional cleaning companies.
- You can soften stubborn stains a little beforehand, but avoid picking as this can damage the pile of velor or chenille.
- Thoroughly rinse out any cleaning agent residue with clean water to avoid rapid re-contamination. Pat the cover dry with a cloth and allow it to dry at normal room temperature. Do not use the upholstered furniture again until it is completely dry.
- Remember that different stains require different cleaning methods.
- Water-soluble stains such as blood, egg, feces, and urine can be treated with cold water. If necessary, a solution of shampoo and water can also be used. It is important not to use hot water as egg whites can curdle.
- For stains such as vomit, coffee with milk, cocoa, copy pen, ballpoint pen, lipstick, mayonnaise, milk, perfume, soot, cream, shoe polish, sauces, soups and ink, it is recommended to use a lukewarm solution of shampoo and water. If the stain cannot be completely removed, after it has dried, you can treat it with white spirit, benzine or a stain remover.
- When it comes to stains from beer, cola drinks, fruit juices, coffee, lemonade, spirits and tea, it is important not to let them dry. Immediate treatment with a lukewarm solution of shampoo and water is recommended.
- For red wine stains, solid residue should be removed immediately with a spoon. A terry towel that has been wrung out under cold water can then be placed on the stain. Patience is required here as the stain will rub off on the towel. This process should be repeated with a clean, damp towel until the stain no longer rubs off. The towel should then be left until it is completely dry.
- For water-insoluble stains such as floor wax, butter, paint, grease, resin, carbon, copying pen, varnish, oil, shoe polish (oil products), tar, it is recommended to use a solvent such as benzine, spirit or commercially available stain water.
- An iron should not be used on candle wax stains. The wax should be crumbled as much as possible and removed carefully. With velor there is a risk of surface damage. If necessary, the stain can be treated several times with mineral spirits.
- For gum and playdough stains on children's chairs or any seating furniture, a commercial icing spray can be used according to the instructions to gently lift the stain. With velor there is a risk of surface damage.
- For aged blood and rust, a white cloth can be moistened with a citric acid solution (1 level tablespoon in 100 ml of cold water) and applied to the stain. The stain should be picked up from the edge towards the center.
- For stains of unknown origin, the water-soluble stain method should be used first. If this is unsuccessful, the method for water-insoluble stains should be used accordingly. Please note that solvents such as benzine and spirit are flammable and should only be used in small quantities.
